Thanksgiving Tuesday

Getting ready. My favorite holiday is coming this week. It’s a soft pleasure in the back of my mind, a nice tingle of anticipation.

Today is shop day. Because I may have the best beloved in the world, he’s doing the shopping. The girl and I just added to the list, but he does the heavy lifting for this holiday.

On Thursday we’re heading down the street to a friend’s house, and we’re all pretty skippy about it, but on Friday, we’re doing a repeat. One of us has a busy weekend, so we’re creating that smorgasbord of true holiday delight–Thanksgiving leftovers.

The beloved is an amazing cook. When he makes dinner, the leftovers are sometimes even better than the first meal. Sweet potato soufflé, mashed garlic potatoes, green beans the southern way, whole cranberry sauce. Mmmmm. Oh, yeah, I guess we’ll have turkey, too, but turkey to me is like a garnish. 😉

I make pretty much one contribution. Overnight cinnamon rolls. I start them the night before, and then let them finish rising on Thursday morning. They go in the oven about the time the beloved starts trying to persuade the girl and me that we don’t need to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Don’t you miss when the parade was actually a parade, rather than a bunch of folks lip synching in front of the store?

But it’s tradition. Memories and togetherness make the tradition sweet. If only the beloved realized–the girl and I soon grow tired of the lip synching, and a taste of the parade is enough. Like a taste of stuffing or a taste of a dinner roll.

Oh, wait! I have to put Aunt Dorothy’s cole slaw ingredients on the shopping list! Preparing makes me almost as happy as the actual day. Because it’s coming! Family, friends, food and football and fun!
